About this vaccine

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. It causes a painful, blistering rash and can lead to postherpetic neuralgia, a chronic nerve pain that lasts months or years. The shingles vaccine is over 90% effective and recommended for everyone 50 and older, even those who have had shingles before.

Who should get vaccinated

  • All adults 50 years and older
  • People who previously had shingles (it can recur)
  • Those who had the older Zostavax vaccine
  • Immunocompromised adults 19+ (doctor consult required)

Common side effects

Most side effects are mild and resolve within 1–2 days.

  • Soreness, redness, and swelling at the injection site
  • Muscle aches and fatigue (1–3 days)
  • Headache or chills (usually resolves within 2 days)

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the shingles vaccine if I've never had chickenpox?

If you're 50+, you very likely had chickenpox even asymptomatically. Vaccination is still recommended.

How long does Shingrix protection last?

Clinical studies show strong protection for at least 7 years, and likely longer. Ongoing studies track durability.

Can I get shingles after being vaccinated?

Very rarely. The vaccine reduces risk by over 90%, and if shingles does occur, it will be significantly milder.
