About this vaccine

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and life-threatening septicaemia. The Saudi Arabian government mandates the meningococcal ACWY vaccine for all Haj and Umrah pilgrims. The vaccine protects against four serogroups — A, C, W, and Y — which are the strains most commonly associated with outbreaks during mass gatherings. Vaccination must be received at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia, and the certificate is valid for 3 years for adults (1 year for children under 5).

Who should get vaccinated

  • All Haj and Umrah pilgrims (Saudi Arabia mandatory requirement)
  • Travellers to countries with high meningococcal prevalence
  • Students going to boarding schools or universities
  • Military recruits
  • People with asplenia or complement deficiency

Common side effects

Most side effects are mild and resolve within 1–2 days.

  • Soreness or redness at the injection site
  • Mild fever or headache (24–48 hours)
  • Fatigue (usually resolves within a day)
